Sicily facing shortage of doctors: seven foreign doctors to arrive

The recruitment of foreign doctors to address the structural shortages of personnel in the Sicilian healthcare system continues. Seven more doctors have been selected in recent days by the Region through an open call issued by the Department of Strategic Planning of the Health department, led by Salvatore Iacolino.

“The innovative recruitment process of non-EU doctors is still ongoing – says the President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani – to fill the staffing gaps and ensure services in hospitals and healthcare companies, especially in border hospitals. This is qualified personnel that ensures the quality of care provided to Sicilian patients and is put into service after selection by a committee composed of department heads and a suitable training period both in terms of language and the functioning of the Sicilian healthcare system.”

The doctors hired in recent months have been mainly placed in provincial health companies managing territorial hospitals. They include surgeons, internists, pediatricians, cardiologists, psychiatrists, orthopedists, anesthesiologists, gynecologists, emergency room doctors, gastroenterologists, neurologists, specialists in intensive care, neonatologists, vascular surgeons, and pediatric heart surgeons, predominantly from Argentina and Cuba, according to the Region.

The recruitment notice remains open. In Sicily, the need identified by healthcare and hospital companies is 1494 units. These companies are committed, with the constant drive from the President of the Region, to complete stabilization procedures and those related to mobility and competitions.
