Judges forget defendant, trial to be redone in Palermo
The appellate judges forgot the name of Simone La Barbera, sentenced to 3 years and 8 months for extortion, in the motivations of the sentence and the Supreme Court has remanded the case for a new appellate trial. The convictions for mafia crimes have become final for Pietro Merendino, Mafia boss of Misilmeri (18 years), Francesco Fumuso of Villabate (12 and a half years), Stefano Polizzi of Bolognetta (17 years). The trial is part of the proceedings stemming from the “Cupola 2.0” investigation, which in 2018 uncovered the attempted reorganization of the new Cosa Nostra. Simone La Barbera, along with three other defendants, had been acquitted in the trial on the alleged extortions against the Napoli sisters Ina, Irene, and Anna, owners of an agricultural company between Mezzojuso and Corleone, who gained notoriety thanks to the television show “Non è l’Arena” hosted by Massimo Giletti, which dedicated several live broadcasts and reports to the case.
