Three brothers still in serious condition: none conscious. Two underwent surgery yesterday.
The conditions of the three small patients aged 8, 6, and 4 years who arrived at the emergency room of the Children’s Hospital of Palermo in code red yesterday remain critical. None of the children are conscious yet, and the prognosis for all of them remains reserved. The conditions of the eldest brother in particular are causing great concern, as he underwent emergency neurosurgery at Civico Hospital to stop severe brain hemorrhages.
The second child also has a complex clinical picture, with craniofacial fractures and other injuries. Yesterday, an operation was necessary to reduce an exposed femoral fracture, carried out by the pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Di Cristina’s operating rooms.
The youngest of the brothers, like the others, is intubated and sedated, admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. Constantly monitored by medical and paramedical staff, he received visits from relatives, including an uncle and some women, also residents in Ribera. The child has contusions and a head injury that affect his breathing, which was already difficult due to instability observed yesterday.
The healthcare staff constantly monitors his condition through CT scans, which will also be performed in the next few hours. If the results allow it, they will attempt to reduce the medication to try to wake him up and eventually proceed with extubation, hoping for a clinical improvement.
For now, the clinical picture of the three children continues to cause great concern, and doctors maintain reserve on their prognosis. Overseeing them is the healthcare director of the hospital company and Emergency department director Domenico Cipolla, supported by a team including all staff and several specialists, including Dr. Marcello Piazza and Luca Maria Lagalla.
