9 convicted and 1 acquitted in Mafia and extortion case in Palermo

The judge of Palermo Patrizia Ferro has sentenced nine defendants in the trial that stemmed from the anti-mafia operation carried out by the Carabinieri in the towns of Caccamo, Trabia, and San Mauro Castelverde. One was acquitted.

In the operation, 13 people were arrested: five in prison and eight under house arrest. Nine chose the fast-track trial and four the ordinary trial currently being held in Termini Imerese. They were accused of various crimes including mafia association, extortion, attempted extortion, aiding and abetting, and drug trafficking. The judge sentenced Rosolino Rizzo to 10 years in prison, Pino Rizzo to 18 years, Giada Quattrocchi to 8 years and 4 months, Rosolino Dioguardi to 8 years, Luigi Antonio Piraino to 4 years, Pietro Cicero to 2 years and 8 months, Luciano Imburgia to 2 years and 2 months, Salvatore Leggio to a year and 4 months, and Calogero Zambaldo to 2 years. The sentence for the latter two is suspended.

The only acquitted defendant, Ignazio Piraino, was defended by lawyer Carmelo Genovese. The investigations were conducted by the Carabinieri of the Cefalù company between 2020 and 2022, and shed light on extortion against entrepreneurs in the construction, real estate, agricultural, and funeral sectors. The profits from the extortions were also used to financially support the leaders of the mafia group.
