On Friday 8 July the Fillea and the CGIL of Palermo, together with the Anpi, the Udu, the Student Network, the Vella club and the Malaspina collective, will commemorate the dramatic events of 8 July 1960 in Palermo.
The new municipal administration was invited to participate in the celebration.

The day will begin at 9 with the laying of flowers at the plaque in via Maqueda, at the corner with via del Celso, which commemorates the four victims of the clashes in Palermo during the general strike called by the CGIL after the events in Genoa on 30 June.
On that day, 16-year-old Giuseppe Malleo, 14-year-old construction worker Andrea Cangitano, killed by machine gun, Francesco Vella, 42-year-old worker and union leader of the Fillea CGil in Palermo, and Rosa La Barbera were killed.
, 53 years old, reached by one of the many shots fired madly by the police as she was about to close the window of her house.

In memory of the victims, in 2019 the Fillea CGIL Palermo had launched a competition in schools to have students try their hand at representing the events of 8 July in an artistic form.
And on Friday two commemorative sculptures created with the help of Coime construction workers Ciro Uzzo and Diego Merendino on the base of selected models conceived and designed for competition.

“July 8, 1960 in Palermo should not be remembered as a simple exercise of memory but because it was a moment of extraordinary revenge force, in which for the first time workers and students took to the streets united – declares Piero Ceraulo, general secretary Fillea Cgil Palermo – .
It was a real city struggle that put at the center not only the struggle against the fascist government of Tambroni, but above all a struggle for rights, work and democracy.
Palermo was the protagonist of a very important historical moment by paying a very high price “.

“The events of 8 July are part of a strong mobilization that involved several cities in Italy, Genoa, Reggio Emilia and Catania, Licata and Palermo in Sicily – adds the general secretary CGIL Palermo Mario Ridulfo – This national anti-fascist mobilization had in itself also the characteristics of a social protest that especially in Palermo crossed with the widespread and transversal social unease that involved student, unemployed and precarious workers.
Today, albeit with the distinctions, we are once again in a condition of social crisis dictated by the context, from the epidemic and the war which, without significant and lasting interventions, could give rise to a climate of tension.
The memory serves to recall the responsibilities of local, regional, national governments and politics, to ensure that this difficult phase is faced with tools, resources, new ideas, trying to take the opportunity of using the phones offered by the Pnrr.
immediately activate a participatory process involving male and female workers to find solutions to people’s needs “.
