288 thousand euro bill to the colossus of citrus juices Ortogel: Catania companies from the prefect

The increase in bills sinks companies and from eastern Sicily comes the request for urgent government intervention. “In your capacity as the highest institutional office, you help us find a way out to deal with a dramatic situation that has struck violently and unexpectedly, and that is leading small and large companies to throw in the towel and close their doors”, have the leaders of the CIA (agriculture) wrote to the prefect of Catania, Maria Carmela Librizzi, who will meet them tomorrow, Friday 23 September.

“Revenues often fail to compensate for production costs,” the companies continue. One of the cases is that of the Ortogel company in Caltagirone, specialized in citrus juices, which risks blocking the production of the industrial plant, after having received a maxi bill of 288 thousand euros (the August invoices for electricity are increased by 300%). “And if a big reality like that of the Calatina company, present in the Sicilian territory with three innovative structures, which has about 200 employees, cannot keep the production costs in the budget – underlines the CIA – let’s think of the hundreds of small farms. that under current conditions, they will certainly not be able to start the citrus season for the 2023 campaign ».

The heavy economic situation, due to the high bills, which is affecting all sectors, has also pushed the territorial Cna of Ragusa to promote a series of urgent initiatives. «We thought – explain the territorial president Giuseppe Santocono with the secretary Carmelo Caccamo – to convene an extraordinary meeting of the presidents of the trades and interest groups in presence at our territorial headquarters in Ragusa, in via Psaumida, for Tuesday. The dramatic moment that we are experiencing by all production categories due to the increase in electricity, fuels, gas and raw materials, on the one hand, and the blocking of credit transfers and delays of the Collection agency in installments for the release of the Durc, on the other hand, led us to call an urgent and unitary appointment to discuss and propose a state of extraordinary mobilization in order to organize sensational protest actions. We ask all the presidents of the professions to be present and, at the same time, in solidarity with the numerous colleagues who are currently going through a period of serious economic crisis. There is no doubt that we can no longer wait for measures to arrive from regional and national governments, among other things grappling with the electoral campaign, and that it is essential to make one’s voice heard as urgently as possible ».
