2,200 people evacuated as wartime device defused in Pantelleria

This morning, the disposal of a 500-pound American aircraft bomb found on January 17 in Pantelleria during the demolition of a building took place. The operation, coordinated by the prefecture of Trapani, was carried out by the army sappers of the 4th Regiment of demolition engineers from Palermo. It was necessary to temporarily evacuate 2,200 residents whose homes fell within the safety perimeter. The municipality provided three temporary shelter facilities at the Pantelleria airport, the elementary school Dante Alighieri, and the middle school on Via Santa Chiara, while the Asp of Trapani and the 118 took care of transferring vulnerable individuals. After the evacuation, the bomb disposal operations were carried out, concluding safely, and the population was invited to return to their homes.
