16 investigated for labor exploitation in fields between Caltanissetta and Agrigento

Sixteen people are being investigated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Caltanissetta for illegal labor exploitation and use of labor in exploitative conditions. The investigation, which began in late 2020, involved the State police and the Carabinieri for a long period of time, and gathered evidence of exploitation by some agricultural entrepreneurs in the Nisseno and Agrigento areas. The workers, mostly foreigners, were taken by “caporali” in vans in poor safety conditions to work, and were paid below the minimum wage. They were exploited due to their precarious socio-economic conditions. The investigation also found that the “caporali” kept part of the workers’ salaries for themselves. This highlights the exploitation of vulnerable workers in the region.
